In my case the problem was that the result set was held open by the application's .NET code while it looped through every returned record and executed another three queries against the database! Over several thousand rows this misleadingly made the original query look like it had been slow to complete based on timing information from SQL Server. When a parameter is used, SQL server will generate the plan only once and then reuse it, and if the value in a subsequent execution differs too much from the original one, the plan will not be optimal

End User Ad-Hoc Reporting Tool: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio or Microsoft Access? - Stack Overflow

Is there a way in SSMS to limit visibility to just views? I know in Microsoft Access I can use database links to backend database objects (for example, views) to hide the 400+ tables from end-users. Which of the above tools (or alternative) would be best for a decidedly non-techie user base of approximately 200 people? What are the pros and cons of each? Also, the IT department has suggested teaching people T-SQL so they may use SSMS

Tools like 0xDBE from JetBrains have SSMS beat by a mile in that regard, and they support multiple RDBMS to boot (not to mention re-factoring, intelligent code completion, etc). We are looking into the plug-in model for SSMS but as we are still in early stages of evaluating we do not have anything specific to share at this time

Similar to this situation, many times a DBA wants a set of command, which they use very frequently, should be available as soon as SQL Server Management Studio is opened.
