Instead of performing step 4 as you've listed,(because my Bind pop-up window provided me with non-human readable strings) I simply cut the string at the bottom of the Bind list and pasted it at the top so that it was the first entry. Unfortunately, even though I had set up the VPN as the default route ("Use default gateway on remote network"), which encrypted most traffic, I noticed that my DNS queries were still being passed to the local (untrusted) DNS server rather than the one at home

How do I add a DNS server via resolv.conf? - Ask Ubuntu

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/130452/how-do-i-add-a-dns-server-via-resolv-conf
Now you will find your resolv.conf looking like this: nameserver 192.168.1.1 nameserver 127.0.0.1 search foobar.com example.com I still don't like the way it's implemented now (seems Ubuntu needs a service for every foo it makes), and would prefer a plain resolv.conf for sure. On the IPv4 tab you can select "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only" as the "Method" and NM will allow you to set the nameserver address(es) manually even addresses are delivered over DHCP

domain name system - VPN Connection causes DNS to use wrong DNS server - Server Fault

  http://serverfault.com/questions/356115/vpn-connection-causes-dns-to-use-wrong-dns-server
As the problem only surfaces when I make a VPN connection, and my DNS resolution goes screwy at the same time, it seems like DNS is the likely candidate. When working with the registry key, the following facts emerge: Changing the order of the GUIDs in the registry does impact the binding order, including for VPN connections Any changes to the key take effect immediately When a VPN connection is completed, the GUID for the connection is added to the top of the bind order if it does not already exist When a VPN connection is closed, the GUID entry for the connection is removed If there are multiple GUID entries for the connection, only one is removed when the connection is closed This mechanism creates the possibility of the following workaround: Examine the Bind registry key Connect to your VPN connection Check the Bind key again and copy the GUID that was added to the top of the list Paste the GUID entry at the bottom of the list 20 times Export the key and clean up the exported file to only include the bind key The result is a key that will support the desired behavior

  http://superuser.com/questions/248311/what-does-local-domain-name-on-router-do-and-how-do-i-get-it-to-work
i think most routers should support .local If your computers OS doesnt support DDNS to tell the router the computers , then you will need to fill the DHCP Reservations section at the bottom of the page of your routers screenshot. For example, on mine it's set to kf8nh.com so machines on my network are all identifiable as foo.kf8nh.com where foo comes from the DHCP client ID or static DHCP reservations

I deactivated the mDNSResponder and reactivated the (updated) discoveryd, and so far (after 10 hours) I haven't seen the problems listed in the article. For instance, when the system is unable to resolve DNS names, discoveryd log messages indicate that it doesn't recognize the replies from the DNS server to its own requests
