My first syntax class (with Jim McCawley) would have been round about 1989, and I remember being surprised he called the pound sign 'the double-cross.' My memory is that everyone I knew called it the pound sign and my father and uncles certainly used it as an abbreviation for pounds when they wrote down large quantities
